Grandmaster
Kown, Jae-Hwa, Father of European Taekwon-Do. Born in 1937 in
Pusa, South Korea. After completing his formal education he worked
as a journalist for Pusan's largest daily newspaper and was the master
instructor for Yonmu-Kwon Taekwon-Do Association in Korea.
In 1965 the Korean government ordered General Choi, Hong Hi, 9th Dan,
highest ranking representative of Taekwon-Do along with a team of
five selected grandmasters, to introduce and spread Taekwon-Do throughout
the world.
Kwon, Jae-Hwa was
one of the five chosen because of his spectacular talent and
accomplishments.Shortly after he began his work as an instructor in
Munich. In 1966 he founded the German Taekwon-Do association, became
its master instructor, was appointed by the Korean government to be
the representative for Europe and Middle Asia and started traveling
to other countries in order to spread Taekwon-Do.
Today, Grandmaster Kwon, Jae-Hwa oversees 150 schools worldwide from
his center in New York where he still teaches on a daily basis. He
travels regularly to Europe to instruct in physically intensive seminars.
From the original 1965 grandmaster team that was sent to spread Taekwon-Do,
Kwon, Jae-Hwa is the only remaining active member.
